Background of Polish Main Dishes
| Poland has some of the most prolific main dishes in the world. So much in fact that most people have heard of Pierogi or Gulasz. While these dishes are wonderful and well loved. The true roots of Polish cooking quite often go unnoticed. Most people don’t know these unnoticed recipes due to a strong language barrier. Polish language, being the 5th most difficult language in the world for an English speaker. Often has words to describe food that most translators just can’t help you with. For example, meat stuffed cabbage rolls is called “Gołąbki” in Polish. The literal translation for this word in English is “Young Pigeons”. Needless to say for someone not fluent in Polish this could generate a few confusing search engine results. Thus the English titles I have used in the above recipes are best representation for the native Polish intentions. Polish cuisine and culture has a strong background in Meat, Fish and Poultry. You will find that almost every main traditional dish in Poland has one of these. In fact most Poles consume around 80kg of meat per year. Some people ask why there are no vegetarian alternative to these recipes, and the answer is simple. There are vegetarian versions, but this site is about tradition and culture. Which means the recipes posted are from a time before being vegetarian was a choice. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t something for everyone in Polish traditional Cuisine. Poland Main Dishes are quite often vegetable based, making adaption easy. Traditionally, Main dishes in Poland are also served with soup and side salads. The variety of these options are overwhelming. If I was still a Vegetarian, Polish cooking would be my first stop for making weekly meals less boring and more comforting.
